“ipconfig /registerdns” – Register Hostname To Active Directory (AD)

As an IP and network management command ipconfig provides different parameters. ipconfig /registerdns is a command which is mainly used to create or update the hostname or A/AAA record in an Active Directory environment. As the parameter name suggests that it will register the computer into a general and public DNS server but it’s not. This means this command will not affect public DNS servers or routers for DNS resolution but only used inside a corporate environment with the Active Directory.

This command will not work for non-domain or a computer not joined in a Windows Active Directory. But will work if the AD is integrated with the LAN DNS server which can a a Windows DNS server. This can be useful to name computer which is joined AD and access it with a domain name easily without remembering or typing IP address.
